Italian Gothic Renaissance Revival Carved Oak Table
Italy, late 19th century
Oak with brass mounts
An extensivley carved Italian Gothic Renaissance Revival table, executed in solid oak. The rectangular top rests over a frieze intricately carved with scrolling acanthus leaves and centred by a single drawer fitted with a brass drop handle. The corners are embellished with expressive lion mask carvings holding brass rings in their mouths.
The table stands on turned and fluted legs joined by a carved stretcher, richly ornamented with foliate and scale motifs. The feet terminate in stylised dolphin heads, adding a distinctive decorative flourish typical of late 19th-century Italian craftsmanship inspired by 16th-century Renaissance models.
This piece showcases exceptional carving and solid joinery, reflecting the revivalist taste for historical grandeur and sculptural detail that flourished in Italy during the late 19th century
